Community Outreach

Elementary student field data from the "Nature Detectives" program, UCSC Natural Reserves and CSUMB Return of the Natives Restoration Education Project.

UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve is centrally located in Marina, CA making it accessible for a variety of outreach efforts including short field trips that can be accomplished in a few hours to multi-day projects. Travel to the reserve is relatively easy making it an ideal location to take K-12 classes and other outdoor education endeavors. Many of the community schools and programs that are in close proximity to the reserve are in high need districts; we work hard to cover all financial costs (e.g. bus fees, etc.) when neccesary. Our agency does not want financial hurdles to prevent users from utilizing the reserve. Reserve staff help coordinate and/or lead on-the-ground activities and can play as large (e.g. designing specific activities and curriculum for groups) or minor a role (e.g. providing a brief introduction and assisting various logistical needs) as needed. If you are interested in learning about the ongoing programs, or discussing new opportunities, we encourage you to reach out and contact UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserves staff.
